2020 In Music
Although 2020 came with many obstacles, the one thing there was no shortage of was good music. Every month, artists released albums and singles that helped distract from the difficulties of the pandemic.
Some of the most notable releases in the rap industry include Megan Thee Stallion’s “Suga” and “Good News”, Rico Nasty’s “Nightmare Vacation”, and Flo Milli’s album. In March, Lil Uzi Vert released a long awaited “Eternal Atake” as his second studio album.
Also highly anticipated, 21 Savage came out with “Savage Mode II”, which debuted at number one on Billboard. Additionally, the posthumous albums of Pop Smoke and Mac Miller had fans celebrating the late artists.
Singles such as Saweetie’s “Tap In” and Jack Harlow’s “WHATS POPPIN” were trending all over social media app TikTok. Other songs popular on social media included Clairo’s “Sofia” and Fousheé’s “Deep End”.
Needless to say, TikTok played a big role in what music was trending by bringing lesser known artists to the public’s attention and creating fun dances to go with songs like Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage”.
Many well known pop artists made big additions to their discographies during 2020. Taylor Swift surprised fans with two full albums, “Folklore” and “Evermore”. Mily Cyrus also released a full, multi-genre album “Plastic Hearts” after years of no music.
Ariana Grande released her sixth album “positions” at the end of October. A long-anticipated "After Hours" topped charts in March as The Weeknd’s first album since 2016. K-pop fans found themselves with a new BTS album, "Be", topping the Billboard 200 for the fifth time. R&B fans of SZA and Kehlani got new music from both artists, with the release of “It Was Good Until It Wasn’t” in May and “Good Days” released at the very end of the year.
2020 was a big year for many up-and-coming artists that might not have been as well known beforehand. Sisters Chloe x Halle released their album “Ungodly Hour”, which attracted many to their music. Rina Sawayama and mxmtoon both released albums that brought them more into the public spotlight. R&B singer and songwriter Giveon released multiple albums during the year, also catching the attention of many.
